Recognizing Signs of Trouble
Noticing changes in your teen’s behavior can be the first step in providing support. For instance, Emma, a mother I worked with, observed her son’s sudden disinterest in soccer—a sport he once loved. This was a significant sign indicating deeper issues.
Recognizing signs of trouble in teen behavior is crucial for parents and caregivers. Adolescence is a time of significant physical, emotional, and social changes. With all the ups and downs, moodiness, and typical drama, it’s easy for parents to miss potential red flags.
All teenagers exhibit occasional rebellious behavior, but certain signs often indicate deeper issues. The most common indicators that a teen is struggling include changes in academic performance, spending a lot of time alone, and unexplained anger or aggression. But other signs are harder to identify, for instance:
-
- excessive secrecy or lying
-
- substance abuse or experimentation
-
- self-harm behaviors
-
- persistent sadness or hopelessness
-
- drastic changes in appetite or sleep patterns
As parents, it’s important not to dismiss these signs as mere teenage angst. Instead, it’s time to open lines of communication with the teenager. Express concern in a non-judgmental manner.
Paying attention to the warning signs and being proactive when necessary is the only way to ensure the well-being and mental health of our teenagers. Parents who are alert and aware during this transformative stage of life can make all the difference.
When you notice any of these signs, seek professional help. Working with counselors or therapists provides invaluable support during challenging times.

Testimonial: A Teen’s Voice of Recovery
Emily’s story of overcoming anxiety and depression with the right support is a testament to the power of seeking help and being an informed, proactive parent.
Before I found the help I needed, every day felt like an insurmountable struggle. My name is Emily, and I’m 17. A couple of years ago, I began to experience overwhelming anxiety and depression. It felt like I was trapped in a fog with no way out. School, friends, activities – everything that used to bring me joy became sources of immense stress. I felt alone, misunderstood, and hopeless.
My journey to recovery started when my parents noticed the changes in me. They saw that I wasn’t just going through a ‘teenage phase.’ I was withdrawing from the world around me. My grades were slipping, and I no longer enjoyed the hobbies I once loved.
What made a difference was how my parents approached the situation. Instead of dismissing my feelings, they sought to understand and support me. They found a treatment center that specialized in adolescent mental health.
The new environment was helpful, I mean it was so beautiful and peaceful. I felt annoyed about being away from home, but feeling heard and understood for the first time was a turning point. My therapist introduced me to coping strategies that helped me manage my anxiety. We worked on cognitive-behavioral techniques. They allowed me to challenge and change my negative thought patterns.
Together, we started to unravel the underlying reasons of my anxiety and depression.
My parents also changed; they started to communicate with me in a way that made me feel safe and not criticized. In fact, their encouragement was very helpful. Recovery wasn’t instantaneous. It took time, patience, and a lot of hard work. There were setbacks, but each challenge was a learning experience. I’ve grown stronger and so much more resilient. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help and that dealing with mental health is nothing to be ashamed of.
I really am glad of how far I’ve come, today I’m excited about what’s ahead and I’m very grateful to my parents for taking a leap of faith.
